evening descends

6:15 and it’s still daylight. Not much, but enough to finish the day’s chores. The tops of the big pines struggle to hold the fog at bay, but it begins to descend onto the hillside. Two Great Horn Owls, invisible in the dusk, call to each other. It was almost warm today and I can almost see the grass again. I catch the smell of smoke from my neighbor’s fireplace as I stand gazing out across the pasture.

This time of day brings a sense of peace to my soul. Even if it’s just for a moment, the worries and fears of the day drift away. William’s nose gently touches my hand reminding me it’s time for his dinner. Despite the cold, despite the snow and despite the damn ice, this is home. Our home.
