Our office has an open floor plan. My desk was in a big room with six desks. Celeste sat in the corner, facing the center of the room, her back against the wall. Hidden behind two large monitors, I almost didn’t realize she was there. Quiet, rarely talking, always working. She was protected by walls inside and out. Nondescript brown hair pulled back, tight. Clothes too large and worn. A beautiful, elegant name that was rarely spoken. Did you know she is very funny? Did you know she is brilliant? Did you know that when she laughs it’s infectious? Did you know she is trying to escape an abusive husband? Did you know she has no family and few friends? Reach past the walls. See the unseen and listen to the silent.
