“…another year over and a new one just begun…”

It’s happened again. The start of a new year. For me, this one dawned with a new feel. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what feels different, but it does. Every year, as December changes to January and I exchange last year’s wall calendar for this year’s, I imagine I will also change self-defeating thoughts to empowering ones and exchange bad habits for good. But that rarely happens and if it does, it doesn’t last. Will this year be the year I can make changes, even a few, that last? I wonder what lies ahead? I wonder what […]

evening descends

6:15 and it’s still daylight. Not much, but enough to finish the day’s chores. The tops of the big pines struggle to hold the fog at bay, but it begins to descend onto the hillside. Two Great Horn Owls, invisible in the dusk, call to each other. It was almost warm today and I can almost see the grass again. I catch the smell of smoke from my neighbor’s fireplace as I stand gazing out across the pasture. This time of day brings a sense of peace to my soul. Even if it’s just for a moment, the worries and

morning snow

The snow is still deep in the pasture. It lies mostly unbroken, smooth and undulating. Grass mounds and other hidden treasure lie beneath the snow making the contour uneven. Fresh as the snow is, it isn’t really white. It’s a bit grey and a bit blue too. I look up at the early morning sky. It is as though the ground has been inverted and pinned to the sky, the clouds mirror images of the pasture’s snow. I briefly wonder what kind of clouds they are. Cumulus? Stratocumulus? Cumulonimbus? I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. They are the same

early morning wonderings

We sit together in the early morning cool, William and I. The coffee in my Choose Love cup warms my hand. My other one rests gently on William’s shoulder, my arm draped across him as he leans gently against me. His black and white coat shines softly in the light of the rising sun. My untrained hands wander along his side. My fingers gently rubbing and massaging his body. Gently stroking his ears. Unable to hear the sounds of the world, he focuses on the sights before him. I watch as his ears perk up when he sees a hawk

some day. every day.

Some days we walk together, talking and sharing our day. Some days I can’t wait to tell you the funny thing that happened at work or the annoying thing I heard on NPR. Some days I feel your absence deep in my heart, in my very soul and it takes my breath away. It overwhelms me. Some days are both. Some days I laugh at your antics as you play in the creek, in the yard. Some days I feel you as you lie close and keep me safe as I sleep. Some days my hand reaches out to touch

unseen, unheard

Our office has an open floor plan. My desk was in a big room with six desks. Celeste sat in the corner, facing the center of the room, her back against the wall. Hidden behind two large monitors, I almost didn’t realize she was there. Quiet, rarely talking, always working. She was protected by walls inside and out. Nondescript brown hair pulled back, tight. Clothes too large and worn. A beautiful, elegant name that was rarely spoken. Did you know she is very funny? Did you know she is brilliant? Did you know that when she laughs it’s infectious? Did

trickles

Wise words from a friend of mine:A trickle of water starts out moving in a straight line. As it moves forward, it encounters obstacles and it changes course to adjust. Always moving forward. Along the way it picks things up and becomes more than it was. Different from that first trickle, but always moving forward. Life is simply a bigger stream. Please feel free to leave a comment below.
